Church misses 3rd base, Mets lose!

How many times has it happened, where one team appeals to the umpires that an opposing player has failed to touch a base during a play? This reporter has personally witnessed such appeals dozens, maybe hundreds of times, and the result is always the same: the umps rule in favor of the runner and the appeal is denied. It's almost automatic.

The key word here is 'almost'. Last night it wasn't automatic; last night the Mets' Ryan Church didn't touch third base, the Dodgers' Joe Torre (remember him?) appealed, and Church was called out.

Instead of the Mets taking an 11th inning 3-2 lead, the game continued into the bottom of the inning, where the New Yorkers promptly imploded, loading the bases and then making two consecutive errors to lose the game.

Ya just gotta luv this game! (Click on the headline to see this famous first.)
