Waving the bloody shirt

During the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War, politicians who wanted to remind voters of the horrors of the conflict would physically wave a bloody shirt to bring back memories of casualties. Later, anyone who evoked past war memories for sympathy votes was said to be 'waving the bloody shirt.'

This week there will be a 'news' program, talking in depth to the people who rescued John McCain from his POW camp. As this campaign draws to a close, we can expect more such remembrances.

BEWARE! The Presidency is not a reward for services rendered, it is an office to be filled by a candidate we the voters deem qualified to lead our country. KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL!
