Americans have historically been geographically challenged. Separated from most of the world by two great oceans and generously endowed with natural self-sufficiency, we have remained blissfully ignorant of just where and who we are in the global scenario.


For almost a decade, the United States has been engaged in war in Afghanistan, thousands of miles from home. It is a war from which upwards of 1,500 Americans and our Allies will never return, yet the average American not only cannot locate Afghanistan on a map, they also know next to nothing of the area's rich historical and cultural background. A new exhibit at New York's Museum of Natural History can enlighten us.
