Ever wonder about the censorship of You Tube videos? Like, just what gets deleted and why, and what happens to them? Well, here's the skinny: Those wonderful astro IQ kids at MIT have developed a monitoring program that checks out just what gets 'taken down' on You Tube, by whom, and for what reason.
It's a VERY cool site; they call it 'You Tomb,'(click on the headline to go there) and these Cambridge genii are currently monitoring 224162 videos, and have identified 4431 videos taken down for alleged copyright violation and 13571 videos taken down for other reasons.
Statement of Purpose
YouTomb is a research project of MIT Free Culture. The purpose of the project is to investigate what kind of videos are subject to takedown notices due to allegations of copyright infringement with particular emphasis on those for which the takedown may be mistaken. Although our initial focus is on videos hosted by YouTube, we are interested in other video collections as well.
