The Empire State Building is going green

Originally constructed in 1930, the landmark Empire State Building is undergoing major environmental surgery that will reduce the architectural icon's carbon footprint by almost 40 percent and push it up among the most efficient of the world's skyscrapers.

The massive refurbishing entails, for starters, the upgrade/replacement of every pane of glass and the installation of  a wireless heating and cooling monitoring system.

Scheduled for completion in 2013, the facelift will include state-of-the-art displays,  perhaps even with motion, to the 102-story light shows the building now features. Shown here is an evening honoring New York's 'other' baseball team.
